The Ball

The ball is oval shaped and is made of four panels. The length of ball in line is 280-300 millimeters and weighs 410-406 grams. The material used in its making is either leather or any other suitable synthetic material; the ball may also be treated to make it water resistant and easier to grip.

Why is Rugby Ball not spherical in shape?

The rugby ball is fatter i.e. rounder and less sharp because it is easier to handle it by drop-kicking it, a move highly favored by the scoring system in the game of rugby. To pass the ball in rugby, this has to be done often in a backward or sideward direction. Furthermore, one key feature of the game is the continuous passing involved. As such, the ball's oval dimensions provide a smooth streamline structure for the ball to be passed backward or sideward quickly and be controlled easily. The ball should also be made to allow for good grip of the ball, ensuring that players can pass and catch the ball confidently and continuously.
