Championships

Rugby is played at international level in whole Europe and rest of the world. It is claimed to be the third famous International sports championship, following Summer Olympics and FIFA world cup. There are several international championships and national tournaments organized by International Rugby Board, which is playing its part in promoting this aggressive game.

The aim of such championships is to promote awareness of this game with a view to further improve the quality and standard of game. The various international championships held under the supervision of IRB are of both men's and women's and are following.

Rugby World Cup

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union contest in the world. The event is organized by the International Rugby Board (IRB), the sport's governing body, and is contested by the men's national rugby union teams. It was first held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and now held every four years. The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Trophy which is named after the pupil of Rugby school credited with the game's invention.

The tournament is claimed to be one of the top three international national sporting competitions in the world, with the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics being the paramount events. The title of world champions is currently held by England, who won the 2003 tournament held in Australia.

Rugby World Cup sevens

The Rugby World Cup Sevens is the world's premier international contest in the Sevens version of rugby union, first held in Scotland in 1993 and held every four years. The prize is the 'Melrose Cup', named after the Scottish town where the first Sevens game was played. It is currently held by Fiji

The World Seven Series

The World Sevens Series is an international rugby union sevens series of tournaments run by the International Rugby Board featuring national sevens teams. The tournaments span the globe.

The Women's Rugby World Cup

The Women's Rugby World Cup is the premier international competition in rugby union for women. The tournament is organized by the sport's governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The championships are currently held every four years

The first Women's Rugby World Cup was held in 1991, and won by the United States. Though the 1991 tournament, along with the subsequent 1994 competition were not officially sanctioned by the IRB. The 1998 tournament held in the Netherlands was backed by the IRB. The current world champions are New Zealand.

The Six Nations Championship

The Six Nations Championship (referred to as RBS 6 Nations for sponsorship reasons), known before 2000 as the Five Nations Championship, is an annual international rugby union competition held between six European sides; England, France (since 1910), Ireland, Italy (since 2000), Scotland and Wales. The winner of the Six Nations is often seen as being the unofficial European Champions.

The Five Nations Championship, with its predecessor, the Home Championship, was the premier international rugby union tournament in the Northern hemisphere. It has also in the past been known as 'The International Championship'.
