Carlow Golf Club is one of those rare parkland species with roots in the 19th century. Carlow is a really superb test of golfing prowess and certainly rates as one of the finest parkland courses in Ireland.
The club is set in the gorgeous green countryside of the South East. It is laid out on what was a deer park attached to the former Bruen Estate with numerous elevated tees, several excellent dog-legs, and small slick putting surfaces.
Carlow Golf Club is an 18 holes Parkland course. Designed by Tom Simpson it is laid out over surging land with eminent tees, several brilliant dog legs and large, slick putting surfaces. There are many long par fours and the 16th is rated as one of the most impressive holes. Christy O'Connor Snr. has chosen it as the leading 16th holes in Ireland. With sandy sub soil, Carlow is playable twelve months of the year and a plugged ball is most almost unheard of. Its qualities are further improved by water hazards at the 1st, 2nd, 10th and 11th.
The four par 3's at Carlow are truly excellent, probably the best being the 180 yard sixth hole, while Christy O' Connor Sr. has selected the difficult par 4 sixteenth as one of his "best 18 holes" anywhere. The most pleasant and picturesque hole is the eighth, where the tee shot is played from the highest point on the course down to a sloping fairway below. To the left and right of the fairway lie two stone faced raths overgrown with adult beech trees.
Really its a good ending to a memorable round
